Puyo Puyo arrow shaped into a seven
Pros:
-Soundtrack. Always love what Sonic Team does with the sound in their Puyo games. The new songs are great, Pursuit Stage music from Puyo 4 got a nice remix, and Fever classics like Popoi's theme return. Really, I can't praise the sound team enough, the Fever series has really established itself in the world of video game soundtracks. I can't wait for the PSP/Wii version to get the better quality soundtrack.
-Daihenshin Fever is actually very awesome, both cosmetically and gameplay-wise. Seeing how your favorite characters look younger and older makes it more fun (even with the accursed art style), and how it plays is very cool. Basically, Pico Fever lets you make ridiculously big chains because the puyo are shrunken, and Deka makes you play very fast, trying to make as many small chains and simple all clears as you can, because the puyo are fat and only take 3 to connect. A very unique experience for Puyo Puyo.
-Hard drop. Pushing UP on the d-pad to make my Puyo piece instantly drop? I didn't know what to expect. Now I find myself doing this in other game modes, even other entirely different Puyo games! It's awesome. Very fun doing this in Deka Fever too. One of the best gameplay additions to Puyo Puyo since... well... since that quick-spin feature put into Puyo 2 (you know, when you don't have enough room to lay your piece horizontally, you can still quick spin it vertically?) I hope Hard Drop sticks around for future titles.
-WiFi. Yeah yeah, 15th had it too I suppose... still it's just nice to see Puyo today online and from what I played, it works great. Really, the DS version of this game is going to be the best, despite the PSP and Wii versions have better graphics/sound. I mean, if you can't play online, you got the crap version :P
Cons:
(God I just realized how ridiculous my personal cons are with this game... well read anyways if you want)
-Story. I STILL don't get to play as Arle in a Puyo Puyo story mode. I don't mind playing as Ringo really, especially with how the campaign allows you to play as other characters sometimes as she gains friends, but the story really drags on, making you face certain characters too many times, and fooling around without getting to the main point of the story until the very last few parts. Other than that, my problems with the story mainly consist of not liking the final boss at all, and not caring for Dark Arle (and I really tried to, seeing how I loved Doppel Arle), mainly because I don't like Arle's voice and I can never take this game's art seriously.
-Cast. FEWER than the previous title? And seriously lacking classic characters, hell even Fever characters. Where's Yu(&Rei), Accord, Rider... hell, I still want to see Gogette return XD But really, the worst thing has to be Sega teasing us with cameos of unplayable Witch and Harpy. That's just cruel and unusual. Poor Harpy didn't even get to share her wonderful voice with us, she just stood there, as if Sega was holding her in place, frozen for the last 10 years. Let that sink in.
-Characters. Not to be confused with Cast, which is lacking, but the characters we DO have... suck. The new characters seem really stupid, at least in design... Ekoro was a cool idea for a villain, but I cannot stand his voice and attitude, so annoying. We get Draco and Skeleton-T!? However, BOTH characters are poorly represented in the Fever style. Which is surprising because I thought Sega did a great job with the classic chars they brought over for 15th Anniversary. Draco's voice is terrible, sounds like a... gremlin or something, when Draco usually sounded cute in dialog, but awesome when shouting attacks! Also, complete and total lack of interaction with Arle. Where is Draco and Arle's heartfelt reunion of beauty contest rivals? Something I was really looking forward to. Would've really helped Draco feel more like herself I think. Instead, Sega sold out, letting the Idol who promoted the game voice Draco, and do a terrible job. And Skeleton-T's character is thrown right out the window, giving him 2 similar skeleton friends alongside him, like The Banshee Trio or something. It's just strange, Skeleton-T is the calm cute skeleton, sipping his tea and enjoying life who happens to go batshit insane over spilled tea. That's absent with this "version" of this classic character.
-Graphics. Do I really have to say anything? I mean, let me just say this. Puyo Puyo 4 came out over 10 years ago. TEN years ago, we had BETTER looking Puyo games. The ONLY thing I find admirable about Fever's graphical "art style" is Sega's undying persistence to continue using it in all their Puyo games, as if it's some kind of statement or something. I mean, remember playing Puyo Puyo Fever back in 2004? Yeah it looks like that still. At least Compile tried to make their sequels look different, especially the later ones. All I'm saying is, even if I DIDN'T hate this Fever art, I'd be annoyed if even Compile made 4 different Puyo games, all using the same unique art style, no matter how much I liked it. It's just fucking lazy. SEGA NEEDS TO LEARN 2 MAKING ART.
-Soundtrack. lol just kidding, I'm just really pissed off about the game's ending/promo theme song. I mean, finally we have a Japanese vocal promotional song to go with our new Puyo game, just like in the days when Katsumi Tanaka jammed out... and we get this giant sell-out garbage cutesy-pop song with the most retarded lyrics. What an insult to Tanaka... But really, this con is more of a personal thing, it takes nothing away from the basic game, just had to rant about this here, sorry.
Anyways... MY FRIEND CODE IS 2579-1681-7592 SO LET'S PLAY TOGETHER K THX!
